There is something to be said about ‘Design thinking’. I am always in awe of people who can solve problems and uncover new solutions effortlessly while I try to brainstorm ‘new ideas’. This week’s blog is all about design thinking and a technology called Comic Life, a resource that teachers can use in the classroom to support students to think ‘outside the box’ and capture their ideas in a unique fashion.

What is Design thinking?

Design thinking is defined by Bower (2017) as capturing and collecting evidence, as well as sharing ideas. Design thinking is ordinarily a way of thinking and working that helps us to solve problems. Using technology, students can create or design impressive solutions.

Comic Life

To those unfamiliar, Comic Life is a photo comic software, a creative tool for visual storytelling that turns photos and images into a comic. It is free online and comes as an App and makes designing accessible to almost anyone. Comic life features simples click and upload pictures; it is suitable for all students and helps to create full comic strips using pre-loaded templates.

Used in the classroom, Comic Life can create an engaging experience for students to learn in an interactive and fun way across multiple subjects. Comic life can be used to help students demonstrate their understanding of a concept. Additionally, in English, students can use comic strips to inspire linguistic expression and foster creative thinking. A great way for teachers to prepare students as successful future citizens is to create opportunities for students to problem solve and express their creativity through open-ended tasks (Bekker. et al., 2015).

There are a range of features in Comic Life that support students in Design thinking. The ‘Inspector Toolbar’ has nine tabs, providing options for a different lettering and image filters. Here, student can design, test and iterate which is central to the design thinking process. Comic Life allows students to create several samples and after arriving at a potential design, they can sight instant visual feedback. Students can then analyse their ideas and find solutions to organisation before spending too much time on any one idea.

Using Comic Life can add many benefits in the classroom, it can support student engagement while also helping students express themselves. The teacher’s approach to introducing Comic Life in the classroom is critical to support deeper understanding.

  1. Hi Courtney,

Thank you for an insightful read on Design Thinking and how to use Comic Life in the classroom, I’ve never heard of Comic Life before but I really like all of the ideas that you mentioned. I agree that it’s a great digital resource to use, one that definitely fosters creativity and allow students the freedom of creative expression. I think students would be highly engaged in using Comic Life as they can relate to comics in an authentic manner. I’m interested to know what would be the implications of using Comic LIfe and how could the choice of pedagogy counter those issues? Overall, a great read and insight on a useful digital tool!
